so !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was linked on the jezebel most popular in the comments, its an anti vaccine website, and look, they are REFERENCING THEIR OWN WEBSITE, you can't do that, that's like "saying according to me, the world is flat, I said that 2 years ago, therefore it is" and if you go to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! here is what it says at the beginning of page 2.

this is the American Academy of Pediatrics, probably fairly reliable

And on their !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that is the World Health Organization (which will be a reliable source), here is what is says also on the beginning of the first page.

if you are going to reference something, make sure it doesn't go totally against what you are trying to proclaim.

Yep, and I'm one it saved. I'll share this with the OPPO Family:

When I was 13 I got Pertussis, also known as Whooping Cough. This is something that's vaccinated for as part of your DTAP shot (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis).

What most people don't realize is that Pertussis is so messed up when you truly catch it that the vaccine keeps it from killing you, not from you getting it. Pertussis basically tries to build up mucus at the entrance to your lungs so, you guessed it, you can't breathe and you die.

I had coughing fits and my face was bright red, I missed a lot of school, obviously I couldn't hang out with friends. I tore my stomach muscles from coughing so much. I couldn't sit up to get out of bed, I had to grab the sheets and pull myself up with my arms. It took 4 trips to the Dr. over 4 months for them to send me to a specialist at the hospital who said "holy shit you have Whooping Cough". Why did he say it that way? He hadn't seen Whooping Cough in decades. I was one of the first documented cases of the return of Pertussis in NJ in the late 90s. It took over 6 months to go from start to finish on it. Partly to blame was my primary care Dr. not sending me to a specialist earlier. But he also hadn't seen Pertussis in decades.

It left me with sport induced asthma, though I rarely have a problem these days (I run a lot, it actually is better now because of it).

Vaccinations are important. My son is vaccinated. If my parents believed a stupid hype theory when I was a kid - I'D BE DEAD. Stop leading diseases your kids don't need to catch come back to life. I couldn't imagine making a conscious choice that could possibly lead to my son getting hurt/feeling pain.

I knew how it was spelled here, but that was as far as it went. The Wikipedia article doesn't actually state *why* the American spelling is different, but it has the "smell" of a common chemical trade name like several other substances around that time - disinfectants and the like.

Ironically, it's still a case of the WHO having a "unique" spelling, except that it's a *formal* unique spelling and not a typo, as they administer the INN. I can only assume the WHO has their INN version as expressly "thio" because to abbreviate "thio" to "thi" was inexcusable for some arcane reason, but then this is the same buffoonish system that insists on things like spelling methamphetamine with no "th" so that more languages can pronounce it, so fuck 'em.

Anti-vaxxers will probably take that as a hidden message that while "thiomersal" doesn't cause autism, thimerosal still does and the publisher of that study deliberately misspelled the name so they could appease Big Vaccine but still not make the claim that the actual ingredients were safe. Because you know, they're not. Jenny McCarthy (a noted public health expert and biochemist) told me so.

(Just in case there's ANY question, I'm totally pro-vax. I'm also all for letting Darwin take care of the kids of anti-vaxxers but NOT at the expense of public health.)

I mean no offense, and there is no need to bring a flame brigade. The reason I have a problem with this post is that Jordan is referencing an article on Jez, or more specifically the comments on that article, and then pulling apart their arguments over here on oppo. If you want to pull it apart and explain the floored logic, do it over there, where it's relevant, and the commenters can defend or adapt their opinions. There is no need to come here and show everyone what a pack of idiots/dicks/ignorant etc they are over on another blog. Hence, First rule of oppo, don't be a dick.

Over the history of oppo on kinja, I've watched many a pitch fork and flame war brigade walk through here based on posts like this being perceived as trolling the other forums, and more often than not, they have been Jez related articles. Everyone is allowed their own opinions, and for the record, I agree with Jordan's point of view. But their is enough room on gawker, let alone the internet for everyone to have a point of view. There is no need to cross post and point out what a pack of retards they are for thinking that way. It's their space to think that way, just like this is our space to think about cars. Did you read the comment Jordan got the link from? Jordan isn't attacking the commenter on Jezebel, he's criticizing the junk science of anti-vaxxers . Note, there's a difference between criticism, which is indeed allowed on Oppo, and an ad hominem attack. Furthermore, Jordan and the commenter he pulled the link from are in agreement that antivaxxers are a bit daft.

I'm aware of the flame wars that have happened on Oppo. I've been here for some of them. But before you go off chastising a fellow Oppo, maybe make sure they're actually doing what you're accusing them of. Jordan's a good kid. And you do him and Jezzies/GTers a disservice by assuming neither he nor they/us would have even a modicum of common sense.

Lastly, Jordan didn't share a comment from Jez/GT to Oppo, so no one got any notification that something they've written was shared to a strange blog in the kinja hinterlands. No one is going to freak out even if there was cause for them to freak out. Jordan embedded links, which don't trigger kinja notifications. I promise you, VERY few GTers or Jezzies venture here to Oppo. Most of us who do are Opponauts ourselves. We get the culture here.
